Perhaps most shocking of all was the attack on a rave festival in Southern Israel, near the Gaza border. None more so than the girl on the motorbike, Noa Argamani, captured by Hamas. Footage posted on social media showed terrified concert goers being dragged into vehicles and driven back into Gaza. At least 260 murdered victims were found at the venue after the attack. Israel's response was swift. War was declared. And Gaza was bombarded with airstrikes before Israeli troops entered with the aim of eradicating Hamas. But just over a week-and-a-half ago, Israel approved a deal allowing for the release of at least 50 hostages over a four-day ceasefire period, which was extended, but has now come to a dramatic end. Now, families in Israel - and across the world -are desperately awaiting the return of their loved ones, while others deal with the pain of finding out their family member has been killed, or still held hostage. me   and told me if you think that's Noah I'm sorry  she's with Hamas like don't don't send me fake   videos I'm not sure who's this and cuz I wasn't  sure and I wasn't ready to be sure right and   then I saw the video that the it's obvious that  it's her and the hopelessness that you feel I I   know how she felt the hopelessness of not being  able to do something while you're being taken   is something uh I couldn't cope with I was angry  I was sad I was everything I don't know Mak some emotions at first it was missiles everywhere  then you see terrorists with big propeller   they made like seats with big paraglides for  terrorists to to slide into Israel and to to   land in Israel from above the uh walls of Gaza  [Music] what would have been going through her   mind in that moment and her boyfriend's mind  he he he can't do anything to help her you   know Natan is a big guy I believe Noah that he  doesn't want to leave her but also there's a   lot of stuff going around there's people dying  and he saw people dying he saw people getting   shoot he doesn't want to die we never thought  something like that would be happen it's a   situation no one has ever encountered right I  don't think someone that watches this show or   any else show like on TV has ever been kidnapped  like it's it's something you can't even imagine   that's a terrified girl there's your friend  uh behind that face what has this done to her   family Noah's mother is not in a good state she  has brain cancer I don't know if you've seen uh   there's a video going around right now that she  talks and she really really doesn't have a lot of [Music] [Music] time the it's the wars not to know anything I was   afraid all the time that somebody will  call me and tell me that my son is a body nobody got alive from this neighborhood it's either dead or kidnapped we have a four hours of messages and  filming and that started to be more and more   more and more severe and he he is letting  us know that there are terrorist inside his   kib boots inside the room shooting on the rooms  inside the room lighting the fire of inside the   house they light the gas the gas the cooking  gas and they light and everything was that's   what he wrote us that it's have fire inside the  house and they cannot breathe he afraid that he   will not survive he is telling us that he loves  us and if he will not survive this I love you I   love you but I don't know if I will sur survive  that please come to help me please send some   somebody please it's urgent please it's my last  moment like this this was the the words it's it's   it's a matter of moments I prayed that my son  is kidnapped because the other choice will be [Music] dead so how did you eventually find out that y was  in Gaza after one week H we got a telephone from   the army they found they located the telephone  they located it in Gaza so that was the first   proof of life but it was not true there are  also reading from the paper that it doesn't   mean anything that it doesn't mean he's alive  doesn't mean he's there just the telephone so   do they share with you how they know he's alive no  they're not sharing anything just telling you and   you are not asking also me we we know that they  cannot tell what they can tell they [Music] tell   and just few days ago we got another uh update  that is alive because you know things can happen   there some people come in alive and come back  dead so he is alive yet and he is well that's   what we know not also again not details but we  know that he is alive any so when was this update   Iris just two days ago I got it while you're in  Australia while I'm here what was that moment like very good very happy H relief  a lot of very good feelings and [Music] happiness Rony was probably the first  one to see what's happening 6:30 were   the rocket barrage on their post also on  the entire country and immediately they saw   all the the people the the look at uh the cameras and the   videos that are fitting in from the border she  was B 1 km inside uh of Israel on the Gaza border   and her job was just uh to sit and to watch any  activity Terror activity against uh Israel what   sort of contact did Ronnie have with her family  that morning the only communication that we had   with her was at 927 just I remember this exact  time she texted her mom not from her from from   her friends form mom don't worry for me I'm okay  I have no reception I have no self reception and   her mom says I love you and she replied again  don't worry for me I'm okay I love you too and   four uh Emoji hearts of red hearts that was  the last [Music] communication so we were a   little bit uh okay and then when we heard from  her we said okay we're relaxed for a few hours   but then we see the the thing is going on and  going on and not stopping we started to to get   really [Music] worried so five weeks in you  found out that Ronnie had died H how did she   die she we we believe that we know there was  a big fire at the end because they couldn't   break in and what we heard from the survivors  that they started to choke uh to suffocate from   uh the smoke it was very thick very dark so  what we believe is that they all suffocated   from smoke because the terrorists had set fire  to the command CER yes yes yes it was a terrible   fire and maybe this is the reason why it took  them five weeks to confirm uh Ron's [Music] death Israel has said the goal  is to eradicate Hamas but in the   process innocent Palestinian are  being killed on a on a personal   level you say you're a father is that  difficult to watch do you grapple with that yes but like I said my main I'm 100% focused  now on keeping my children uh safe it was a   massacre How the UN's bias and inaction compromise its foundational mission 13 February 2024 By: YNET Opinion: The IDF's discovery of a Hamas tunnel below UNRWA's headquarters in Gaza exemplify how to UN continues to remain idle on issues it holds itself responsible for. Following the path of the League of Nations before it, the United Nations is similarly treading a path marked by partiality, compromising its fundamental mission of peacekeeping, especially in the context of the war between Israel and Hamas. The discovery by the Israel Defense Forces, of a Hamas tunnel under the UNRWA headquarters in Gaza , as well as an operational room dedicated to servers belonging to the terrorist organization, reveals not only a security breach but also a moral failing on the part of the UN, which is incapable of distancing itself from the influence of Hamas and its ideology. These events highlight the UN's inability to deal with the various actors in the war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group objectively and fairly. The organization's silence and delayed reactions to the atrocities committed by Hamas, including sexual violence against Israeli civilians, contrast with the speed of its condemnations in other contexts. This reluctance to recognize and condemn terrorist acts when they target Israel, fuels this bias, thus undermining the UN's credibility in its fight against terrorism. The refusal of the UNRWA Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, to acknowledge Hamas's influence over the organization demonstrates dangerous complacency and the moral bankruptcy of the UN agency. UNRWA, mandated to assist Palestinian refugees, thus finds itself exploited, its resources diverted to terrorist activities, raising questions about the agency's funding. As the United States is deciding whether to continue funding UNRWA, members of the European Union should do the same. In another vein, the handling of sexual violence starkly illustrates the UN's double standards since October 7th. While the organization is quick to denounce minor incidents in other circumstances, it shows astonishing restraint when the victims are Israeli. This silence is not only a betrayal of universal values of protection for victims of sexual violence but also a demonstration of how ideology distorts the UN's mission. The influence of the Islamist and Muslim Brotherhood ideologies is not limited to the UN or the management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is also evident in their interactions with anti-racist and feminist movements, using their terminology to weaken democracies and absolve terrorist actors like Hamas. This hijacking of social activism for specific political agendas reveals a vulnerability of the West and the UN to ideological manipulations, endangering democratic societies. The role of Qatar and other Islamic states in spreading this ideology through the funding of academic institutions in the United States, in particular, underscores a well-oiled strategy aimed at reshaping the discourse on human rights and colonialism. By systematically presenting terrorist groups as victims of oppression, these efforts seek to immunize these actors against legitimate criticism, while blaming their actions on the supposed colonial policies of the West. Faced with these challenges, the UN is at a crossroads. It can choose to reaffirm its commitment to impartiality, transparency, and the universality of human rights, or continue to be influenced by partisan ideologies that undermine its integrity and mission. To regain its credibility and legitimacy, the UN must distance itself from political and ideological influences that compromise its objectivity and reevaluate its control and accountability mechanisms. The current situation demands deep introspection from the UN. It is imperative that the organization reexamines its practices, policies, and affiliations to ensure it remains a tool dedicated to nations and not a supra-administration held hostage by dictatorial states. Russia Has Pledged To Extend Political Support To Hamas 18 February 2024 By: MEMRI Left: Hamas delegation members with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov during January 2024 Moscow visit; Right: Hamas delegation members with Bogdanov during October 2023 Moscow visit (Images: T.me/hamasps, January 19, 2024; October 26, 2023) Online Daily 'Rai Al-Youm': Russia Has Pledged To Extend Political Support To Hamas, And To Place Its UNSC Veto Power At Hamas’ Disposal According to a February 10, 2024 report in the online daily Rai Al-Youm, owned by Palestinian journalist Abd Al-Bari Atwan, Russia has recently conveyed its support to Hamas and the other Palestinian resistance factions, and pledged to place its UN Security Council veto power at Hamas’ disposal and to aid it in various ways, excluding the provision of weapons. The report states further that Russian officials expressed gratitude to the Hamas leadership for causing the U.S. and the West to shift their attention from the war in Ukraine to the war in Gaza. Some of these messages may have been relayed to the Hamas leadership through a Hamas delegation, headed by the movement’s international relations chief Moussa Abu Marzouq, that visited Moscow on January 19, 2024. The delegation, which also included Hamas Political Bureau member Bassem Na’im and the Hamas representative in Moscow, met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Putin’s Special Representative to the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov. According to a report published by Hamas, the delegation “held political consultations with the Russian foreign ministry about ways to [achieve] a ceasefire” in Gaza and “in order to clarify the movement’s position and policy” regarding the Israeli hostages it is holding. The report adds that the delegation “stressed the Palestinian people’s right to achieve freedom and return, and its right to oppose the Zionist occupation by every possible means.” Bogdanov, for his part, “expressed his country’s support for the Palestinian people’s rights and described the efforts it is making vis-à-vis the relevant elements to promote a ceasefire” in Gaza. [1] It should be noted that this is the Hamas delegation’s second visit to Russia since the October 7, 2023 Hamas terrorist attack. The same delegation visited Russia on October 26, 2023, less than three weeks after the attack. [2] These visits are a direct continuation of Russia’s ongoing relations with Hamas in recent years, which included multiple visits to Russia by Hamas leaders who stressed the movement’s “right” to “oppose the Israeli occupation by every means,” i.e., to carry out terrorist attacks, and also expressed support for Russia’s foreign policy. [3] gainst this backdrop, former Hamas official Mustafa Al-Lidawi disclosed in an article that, in the months since the outbreak of the Gaza war, Russian President Putin has conveyed messages of support and praise for Hamas and even expressed his “admiration for the operations of the Palestinian resistance.” Lidawi called on Putin to complement this praise with practical and serious, rather than theoretical, positions. This report presents the Rai Al-Youm report on Russia’s messages to Hamas, and translated excerpts from Al-Lidawi’s article. Rai Al-Youm: Russia Clarified To Hamas That It's On Its Side And Ready To Assist It In Additional Ways, Excluding The Provision Of Weapons As stated, on February 10, 2024, Rai Al-Youm reported on messages of support conveyed by Russia to the Hamas leadership. The report states that Russia’s consultations and coordination with the leaders of the Palestinian resistance factions indicate that this country does not care how Israel and the U.S. classify these factions, and adds: "The Hamas political leadership recently received a message from Russian diplomatic corridors, conveying that 'we are on your side and will back you in the Security Council.' Senior Hamas official Dr. Moussa Abu Marzouq heard this from prominent figures in the [Russian] foreign ministry and defense ministry when he visited Moscow. [Hamas leader] Ismail Haniya also heard this, from the veteran and leading Russian diplomat [Mikhail] Bogdanov." The report states further: “In Moscow, a general in the defense ministry asked Abu Marzouq directly, 'How [can we] serve you? What can we supply you with, other than weapons?' From the context, it was possible to understand that Moscow wants to exhibit more openness toward the Palestinian resistance, but does not want to cross too many red lines, because the right wing in Israel, which currently controls [this country], 'is very sensitive' and 'it is likely to turn more firmly against [Russia] in Ukraine,' as a senior Russian official remarked to a senior Palestinian official. Abu Marzouq, with his incisive wisdom, expressed gratitude for 'the Russian initiatives' and noted that the Palestinian resistance is grateful for Russia's political support and 'anticipates more.' Regarding weapons, [the Russians] were told that the Hamas movement is content with the backing that Russia provides to [Hamas’] partner, the Lebanese resistance [i.e. Hizbullah]." The Russians Thanked Hamas And The Other Palestinian Factions For Causing The U.S. Planes To Leave Ukraine For The Gaza Strip Noting that "the openness towards Moscow is 'a real and substantive achievement' according to the criteria of Abu Marzouq and the rest of Hamas’ diplomatic team," the report goes on to state that "Moscow recently added the [Palestinian] Islamic Jihad [PIJ] to its contact and consultation array. Even before this, in a meeting in Doha, the Russians told the Hamas leadership that they appreciated the role of the resistance factions in engaging some 5,000 Western and American planes that had [previously] spied on Russia and its operations in Ukraine but have now been redeployed to the Gaza Strip." Russia Promised Hamas Leaders To Place Its UNSC Veto Power At Their Disposal; Warned Them Arab Countries Are Plotting Against Them The report adds that, "behind the scenes, the Russians made a commitment to the Palestinian resistance: ‘our veto [power] at the Security Council will be at your disposal.’ This is a direct commitment by Moscow that the Russian veto will oppose any American or Western proposal aimed at holding the Palestinian people responsible. The impression in the resistance circles to date is that Moscow has fulfilled this commitment and used the veto [power] at least three times 'to protect the resistance and the people of Gaza' from dangerous draft resolutions.” The article concludes by quoting Russian diplomats as saying that "the Americans deliberately eliminated the International Quartet in order to deprive Russia of its role in the regional peace process," and that "a prominent Russian military official warned representatives of the Palestinian resistance that 'some Arab countries are plotting against you' and constitute a significant element 'in support of the Israeli aggression.'"[4] Former Hamas Official: Putin Is Grateful To Hamas For Drawing America Away From Ukraine; He Should Reward Hamas For This In a January 2, 2024 article, Palestinian writer and researcher Dr. Mustafa Lidawi, formerly Hamas’ representative in Syria, Lebanon and Iran, wrote that the war in Gaza caused the U.S. and the West to shift their attention from Ukraine to the Gaza Strip, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin used this to increase his attacks on Ukraine and attain significant achievements on the battlefield. He added that Putin should reward Hamas for providing him with this opportunity, and stressed that the Palestinians will not suffice with the messages of gratitude and appreciation that Putin has already conveyed to Hamas through mediators, but expect more tangible assistance. Lidawi wrote: “[Russia] may be the one that benefits the most from the war against Gaza. It took advantage of America’s and the European countries’ preoccupation with Israel’s cruel aggression against Gaza to boost its forces in Ukraine and direct all its military power against it… It [also] increased its precise attacks on hundreds of sensitive facilities and strategic targets, whose destruction influences the course of the war and weakens the Ukrainian home front, and [Russia] achieved in the last three months what it had not managed to achieve in a whole year of military action. “Russian President Vladimir Putin used the new international circumstances to take serious and quiet action on the various fronts in Ukraine: the deep ones, the far ones and those near the Russian borders, taking fierce revenge on the Ukrainian leadership… He understood that the American and Western strategic supply lines [to Ukraine] had been severed, the weapons shipments had stopped, along with the support and assistance campaigns, that the media war against his country was waning and that the Ukrainian leadership had grown weaker in the conflict and was unable to defend [its] territory… He took advantage of this situation to attack, occupy, bomb, destroy and achieve many [goals] he had dreamed of and hoped for… “The Palestinians, for their part, understand that they are the ones who provided the Russian president and his country with this golden opportunity to achieve his goals. [They understand] that, if the U.S. and Europe had not been preoccupied with the war in Gaza and had not turned to support, aid and defend the Zionist regime, [Putin] would not have been able to recover what he had lost… and regain his deterrence and advantage. The U.S. and its allies would have probably continued to exhaust Russia, crush it, destroy its economy and isolate it... “In return, the Palestinians expect the Russian leadership to acknowledge the favor and reward them with an equal or greater favor: by aiding and supporting them, backing them and assisting them, and thwarting the plots against them and the decisions aimed at harming them and eliminating their cause. But only if [Russia’s] positions are not theoretical, weak, vague and ineffectual, but rather serious and practical [positions] that will frighten and alarm the enemy, and force it to withdraw, halt the war and stop the attacks. “The Palestinians are probably aware of the gratitude felt by the Russian president towards their resistance [forces, i.e., Hamas], of his praise for [Hamas’] steadfastness, and of his admiration for its operations and for the [Palestinian] people: its patience, steadfastness and willingness to give, and the way it embraces the resistance. The Palestinians know that [Putin] conveyed these positions of his through mediators and allies. But the Palestinians believe that this gratitude is not enough. Theoretical support is useless and is powerless to change reality. The Houthi Hypocrisy – Maintaining Vast Arsenals But Relying On The West To Feed The Starving Yemenis 24 February 2024 By: MEMRI Malnourished child in Yemen hospital Across the Middle East, failed states and territories depend on massive amounts of humanitarian aid from the West to feed and care for populations. Many of these are run, de facto, by Iran via proxies. One such proxy is the Ansar Allah, commonly known as the Houthis , the organization that controls much of the country, including the capital Sana'a and 70%-80% of the population –and which has, for the past decade, been supplied by Iran with advanced and sophisticated weaponry. Yet while Yemen, whose 32 million people are among the poorest and hungriest in the world, receives billions of dollars in humanitarian aid every year, the Houthis maintain a vast military, complete with arsenals of the latest weapons and equipment, including missiles and drones that are, based on observation, worth tens of millions or even billions of dollars. These are stockpiled under the noses of the Western bodies and organizations on the ground – just as happened in Gaza with Hamas and in Lebanon with Hezbollah. According to U.S. Navy Admiral Brad Cooper , deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, the Houthis are "the first entity in the history of the world to use anti-ship ballistic missiles ever... certainly against commercial shipping, much less against U.S. Navy ships." He added that it would be "unwise to consider them" a ragtag terrorist group. The Houthis – whose official motto is "God is great, death to America, death to Israel, a curse upon the Jews, victory to Islam" – are laser-focused on building military might and carrying out attacks on ships in the Red Sea – to the point where the State Department, on February 21, condemned them for "continu[ing] to demonstrate disregard to the Yemeni people" for "risking spillage of fertilizer and fuel into the sea and threatening Yemen's fishing industry" and "bringing corn and other food supplies to the Yemeni people." It added that they are "preventing the delivery of food and essential items on which the Yemeni people rely and making it difficult for humanitarians to do their essential work, endangering an already fragile humanitarian situation." More than two-thirds of Yemen's population – some 21.6 million people – depend on food and humanitarian aid from international organizations to avoid starvation. Severe maternal malnutrition and mahram restrictions on women preventing them from going anywhere without a male family member exacerbate the situation. The United Nations warned as early as 2017 that Yemen was facing "the largest famine the world has seen for many decades, with millions of victims," and that "Yemenis are not going hungry, they are being starved ." The World Health Organization has noted that Yemen's health system is near collapse ; a WHO official said in April 2023 that 540,000 children under five are currently suffering from severe acute malnutrition "with a direct risk of death." Doctors and nurses describe children who are "just skin and bones," motionless on hospital beds, their bodies covered with sores, and with barely enough energy to breathe or open their eyes. It has been known for years that the Houthis are stealing aid directly from the mouths of the people of Yemen, and this is ongoing . As of 2018 and 2019, according to a UN World Food Program report as well as media and the Yemen government itself , food aid was being stolen, withheld, and misappropriated by the Houthis. A 2020 Human Rights report also stated that the Houthis were diverting and blocking aid. It is known that the Houthi organization, The Supreme Council for the Management and Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and International Cooperation, has complete oversight over all humanitarian aid work in territories under most of Yemen. As of February 18, 2024, according to Pentagon figures , since November the Houthis had attacked at least 45 ships in the Red Sea, as well as launching missiles and drones at Israel. The U.S. Navy has shot down nearly 100 Houthi drones and missiles, with its ships engaging in combat in a way they haven't since World War II. The world's major container ship companies are all now going around the Cape of Good Hope, with an additional month of travel time and a million more dollars in fuel costs – posing, according to U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell , a risk to the global economy. On January 17, the Biden administration named the Houthis a Specially Designated Terrorist Group on January 17, taking effect February 16. This long-overdue move comes three years to the day after President Biden delisted the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, when the UN and aid groups said that the designation could hamper humanitarian assistance to Yemen . The UN has expressed similar apprehensions about this new designation as well. The Houthi political bureau's near-daily statements and media releases, and the organization's many military parades, aim to show that the group is a strong military force in the region. The missiles and drones it showcased in a massive September military parade , with ranges of 400 to 1,900 kilometers, are derivatives and variants of Iranian weaponry . Their most recent "armed popular show of force" – a massive parade on December 20 – was intended "to send a message of readiness and preparedness to confront the forces of hegemony and arrogance" – i.e. the U.S. and its allies in the region. The same "forces of hegemony" that the Houthis are targeting – the U.S. and other Western countries – are sending millions in humanitarian aid to Yemen to help feed its starving population. Since 2015, the EU has provided over 1.4 billion euros in aid to Yemen; the U.S. has provided almost half of all aid – $5.4 billion in total. In February 2023, the U.S. pledged nearly $450 million. Another top donor to Yemen is Saudi Arabia , which in 2019 pledged $500 million, as did the United Arab Emirates . Additionally, the World Food Programme said in 2023 that it planned to provide emergency food assistance to 15 million people that year. Humanitarian and non-government organizations have remained largely silent about the corruption and the theft of much-needed food and supplies. As more becomes known about the Houthis, it likewise becomes clear that they are thieves stealing aid destined for their children and women, heartlessly allowing them to literally starve to death. Almost no one in the Middle East, or groups in the West who claim to care about human rights in the region, are saying one word. As the Houthis gain prominence across the Middle East, and now in the West, for their actions against both Israel and the U.S., the left has been touting their "long tradition of solidarity with the Palestinian people " and their role as an anti-imperialist resistance movement . Beginning in December in New York City, protests are featuring crowds chanting "Yemen, Yemen, make us proud, turn another ship around!" and "Hands Off Yemen." Pro-Houthi marches continued , including with a January 12 "Hands Off Yemen" rally outside the Yemen UN Mission in New York. The chant was heard at a 200,000-strong protest in London as well on January 13. Meanwhile, back in Yemen, the Houthis continue to impose their will on the populations under their control – including with death sentences for university students, as well as punishments such as flogging and stoning for "immoral acts," and shaving boys' heads for the crime of sporting "Western hairstyles." The Biden administration's January 2024 designation of the Houthi movement as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist – after it formally delisted it as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist soon after taking power in January 2021 – is a good step, albeit one already shown to be further inflaming protestors. Another positive development is the European Union's mission to protect ships in the Red Sea from the Houthis . Additionally, the State Department emphasized that "we and our partners will continue to take appropriate action, as needed, to protect freedom of navigation and commercial shipping from Houthi attacks. But the impact of these moves on the Houthis' attacks on Red Sea shipping, together with the U.S. Navy's operations, appears limited so far, as they continue to carry out significant military operations against sea vessels and U.S. drones. In light of the Houthis' call in mid-January to expand the regional conflict against the U.S., and its warning that Europe would be their primary victim, a stronger military response might be needed to stop their attacks.
